Vocal Cord Closure (Focused Singing)

Have you ever wondered why your singing tone is breathy? Do you run out of breath frequently, despite the fact that you take large breaths? Are teachers, coaches, or conductors asking you for more focus in your tone—but then not explaining how to achieve that?

The cause of “non-focused” (breathy) singing has to do with the way your vocal cords close (“approximate”) as they vibrate. This 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—will explore vocal cord closure and the factors that affect it. You will learn:

  • How your vocal onset affects your vocal cord closure throughout a sung phrase

  • The connection between legato singing and healthy vocal cord closure

  • How different types of consonants affect vocal cord closure (in both positive and negative ways)

Remember, practice makes permanent. To improve the focus in your tone, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Vocal Cord Closure workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
