Neck, Jaw, Tongue: A Singer’s Guide

They stick together. It’s one for all and all for one with these three characters who want to control your life as a singer.

—Richard Miller, On the Art of Singing (1996), p. 233

What are these “three musketeers of tension”? The singer’s neck, jaw, and tongue, of course! But no singer needs to be a victim of this terrible trio, if they have the right awareness and tools.

Neck, Jaw, Tongue: A Singer’s Guide is a 2-hour seminar and accompanying vocal exercise routine—delivered live, via Zoom and also available on video—all about neck, jaw, and tongue alignment, release, and flexibility while singing.

You will learn:

  • The Dirty Dozen: the 12 most common problems that singers experience with their neck, jaw, and tongue—and how to address them

  • Stretches and self-massage techniques

  • Best practices for monitoring the position of neck, jaw, and tongue

  • The importance of separating tongue and jaw function

  • How to avoid neck, jaw, and tongue tension when singing in the high range

The seminar includes:

  • 60 minutes of interactive presentation by Dr. Julia Nielsen

  • 60 minutes of singing vocal exercises (participants remain muted)

  • Ample time for Q&A

  • A seminar booklet, delivered electronically, including handouts and the notated vocal exercises

  • Unlimited access to a video recording of the seminar for 30 days after the live event
