Preventing Vocal Fatigue: A Singer’s Guide

During a long rehearsal or practice session, does your voice sometimes get rough, raspy, hoarse, or dry? Do high notes—or low notes—become more difficult to produce? Or maybe even go away? Does it feel like you have to work harder and harder, but for results that get worse and worse? Afterwards, is your speaking voice a little off somehow?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have experienced vocal fatigue!

During this 2-hour seminar and accompanying vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—you will learn how to keep your voice fresh and comfortable, even during extended periods of singing, including:

  • The most common technical causes of vocal fatigue, including issues related to breath pressure, vocal weight, body alignment, and physical tensions

  • The difference between being vocally "tired" (tissue fatigue) and vocally "tight" (muscle fatigue)

  • Body scanning to identify and release the muscular tensions that lead to vocal fatigue

  • How to perform a vocal cord swelling test

  • Re-setting procedures you can use during practice and rehearsal, like straw phonation and laryngeal massage

  • How to treat vocal fatigue after it has already occurred, to restore your voice more quickly

The seminar includes:

  • 90 minutes of interactive presentation by Dr. Julia Nielsen

  • 30 minutes of singing vocal exercises (participants remain muted)

  • Ample time for Q&A

  • A seminar booklet, delivered electronically, including handouts and the notated vocal exercises

  • Unlimited access to a video recording of the seminar for 60 days after the live event (through June 27, 2024 PT)
