Italian, French & German Vowels

A key to excellent foreign language diction is clarity of vowels sounds. Singers encounter many vowel sounds that do not exist in their native languages when singing foreign language repertoire, and must learn not only how the vowel would be spoken, but how it must be formed when singing.

This workout will focus on a handful of the typical vowel-related challenges faced by native English speakers when singing in Italian, French, and German, including:

  • The “bright Italian AH vowel”

  • Closed vs. open OH and EH vowels in Italian

  • French nasal vowels

  • The mute e in French (the French schwa)

  • French mixed vowels, like [oe] and [y]

  • The German umlaut (e.g., ü)

  • The German “-er” ending (e.g., er, teuer, Sänger)

Remember, practice makes permanent. To perfect your Italian, French, and German (IFG) Vowels, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every IFG Vowels workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
