Register Transitions

Are you plagued by a “ka-chunk”-ing sound or sensation as you transition from your head/falsetto voice to your chest/full voice? If so, you’re in good company! But this “speed bump” can be negotiated…

During this 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—you’ll be guided through a battery of vocal exercises designed to smooth your primary register transition: from chest/full/modal voice (thick mechanism) to head/mixed/falsetto voice (thin mechanism). And you’ll learn how to do so while avoiding an audible break at this pitch point (and the decrease in power, focus, resonance, or comfort that can come with it).

You will learn:

  • How body connection, vowel choice, and facial posture facilitate smooth register transitions

  • How to strengthen the lower head voice and lighten the chest voice in this pitch area

  • Fascinating historical exercises that were used hundreds of years ago to facilitate register transitions

  • Why men should exercise their falsetto voice, and why women should exercise their chest voice

Remember, practice makes permanent. To solidify the coordination of your register transitions, we invite you to repeat this workout often. Every Register Transitions workout is different, while focusing on the same set of fundamental skills.
