Singing Seated
Many of us have to sing while seated in rehearsals. But did you know that if you don’t sit with good body alignment, your breath support and vocal range can be severely compromised?
And did you know that singing seated can provide helpful feedback for the body—sensations that can help you actually improve your breath support?
During this 45-minute vocal workout—delivered live, via Zoom—you will learn how to sit properly for singing, while you are guided through a series of breathing and vocal exercises. These exercises will help you explore the total body connection that singers use to pace and energize their outflow of air while they sing. Vocal exercises will focus on:
Diaphragmatic, costal, and dorsal breathing (inhalation)
Balanced lower-body engagement as singing begins (onset)
Appoggio: the cooperation between muscles of inhalation and exhalation (support)
Bonus! We will also study how to properly hold a music folder or score, to avoid back pain, fatigue and tension in the arms, and “folder shoulder”.
Please have an appropriate chair and a folder available. You will need to sit on a straight-back chair (like a kitchen chair, rather than a couch or armchair). You will also need a music folder, music score, or a binder that could stand in for one.
