What is Open Studio?

Open Studio is an online masterclass: a new Co-Vo format, during which Julia will work one-on-one with several pre-selected singers on a single concept in vocal technique. Each singer will be guided through vocal exercises that address this technical concept, and will sing a brief song or excerpt from their repertoire that includes the concept.

How do I participate in Open Studio masterclasses?

Although this is not a “workout" format for attendees, like most Co-Vo classes are, it is not a normal master class either (i.e., where participants traditionally sit quietly as passive observers). Since you can remain muted on Zoom, you will be welcome to “try out” all the exercises that the working singers try—to find out what works for you!

What is the focus of the September 16 Open Studio? Resonance!

Julia will guide the three working singers in vocal exercises that focus on their resonance. These exercises will explore:

• The five elements of the classical singer’s “open throat”

• The crucial connection between tongue release and improved resonance

• What chiaroscuro actually means

• How vowel quality interacts with resonance

• Common resonance traps to avoid

What does each Open Studio masterclass include?

• A brief overview of the technical topic by Dr. Julia Nielsen

• Three working singers, each of whom will spend approximately 25 minutes working with Julia on vocal exercises and on a short repertoire excerpt of their choice

• Q&A

• Access to the video of the masterclass for 30 days after the live event, for all registrants

What if I’d like to be considered to be a working singer at a future Open Studio masterclass?

The four singers for the September 16 Open Studio masterclass have already been selected. However, if you’d be interested in participating in a future Open Studio masterclass, please send an email to Dr. Julia (julia@singerspace.com) expressing your interest! There is no cost to the working singers, who generously share their process with the masterclass attendees.

Recording available! A recording of the masterclass will be available for one month after the live event (through October 16, 2023) for those who cannot or did not attend in real time, or who wish to review the program.
